One thing most people don’t know about me is that I’ve built a car with my son.
From the engine to the wheels to the trunk.
My son was six. I was forty, I mean thirty-something.
The truth is he could have built it without me. In fact, he mostly did. I just turned the pages of the manual.
How’s it possible that a little kid could put 244 pieces together, on the first try, and have it come out perfectly?
Awesome instructions.
Step-by-step images and simple words using a direct, clear and precise process.
Legos has nailed it and here’s why thinking like them can totally change the way your business runs.
If you stopped and thought about how many systems you use in your biz, you’d be amazed.
Let’s take answering your phone (or email). Your welcome message, the information you capture, the follow-up, the follow-up to the follow-up: that’s all a process.
Or the way you share a blog post. From writing to editing, to creating an image to editing an image, to uploading to sharing on social media, to sending out an email. That’s all a process.
But the problem is that most of these processes are captured in our brains. So it takes time and energy to share this knowledge with others. You know how it goes. “It’s easier for me to do it than have to explain and teach it to someone else.”
DOWNER ALERT: These beliefs keep us from moving ahead.
Instead you want to take the time, (yes it may be painstaking but worth it), to capture every step of every process in your biz or role. That way you can do the liberating “D”: DELEGATE.
Feel confident that someone else can accomplish that task or project by reading your step-by-step instructions (just like Legos does).
It’s how a successful business should run.
A super cool app to make this process, (of creating a process), a breeze is called Sweet Process. They sum it up well:
“Finally. Get those repetitive tasks out of your head and documented, so you’re not stuck doing everything yourself, forever.
If my eight year old can put together 244 pieces on his own with no mistakes, certainly someone on your team can manage a task you shouldn’t be doing.
They just need clear, simple and awesome instructions.
So on that note, this weeks challenge is an easy one. Let me know ONE task that someone else could take off your already full plate, if they just had the know-how.
I know you’ve got one, so puh-lease drop it in the comments and inspire other Lifers. I’ll be waiting for you.
Putting in the extra time and brain power to get this done once will save unlimited time and energy in the future. It’s worth it.
To getting more of the right things done!

Mridu
