I didn’t suck up enough.
I didn’t hang around the right people.
I didn’t play the political game.
That’s what I told myself when I got passed up for a promotion.
Before starting my biz I spent 12 years in marketing and advertising agencies working on multi-million dollar accounts with companies like Amex, Mercedes, and Seagram’s.
I dealt with an insane amount of details across multiple clients and projects.
I put my head down and worked my butt off but didn’t get a promotion I felt I was very qualified for.
When I asked my Director about it she gave me feedback regarding my leadership.
Although I did really good work, I wasn’t demonstrating some qualities she was looking for.
Like presenting unique ideas or identifying new solutions or opportunities.
I later realized why I didn’t meet those expectations.
I was always caught up in the details.
I was buried so far in the weeds that I couldn’t get out of my own way to act on those skills I knew how to do.
The truth was I did have great ideas. I could create valuable connections. I knew how to solve problems.
BUT I couldn’t figure out how to FIND THE TIME to focus on those leverageable qualities that would influence my perception.
Now looking in from the outside, I see this issue with so many women.
- They’re caught up in the minutia because they don’t know how to take control of their time.
- They’re in constant reactive mode because they don’t know how to focus on true priorities.
- They’re drowning in to-do’s because they don’t know what or how to delegate.
- They’re investing too much time on tasks because they don’t know how to let go of perfectionism.
Which are all traits successful people must develop in order to get to the next level.
These are the characteristics that make colleagues, supervisors, bosses, or clients take notice.
I know from my experience that not nurturing these skills kept me playing at a smaller game for years.
It kept me in mediocrity. It kept me in stagnation.
Here’s the worst thing. Over time it impacted my confidence.
It’s a vicious cycle.
I couldn’t get out of the weeds to focus on higher-level thinking…
Which meant I got passed up for the promotion…
Which meant my confidence was impacted…
And I started the cycle again.
I truly don’t want to see you getting passed for promotions or missing goals because you’re lacking leadership skills too.
It’s frustrating and unwarranted because you’re so much smarter, capable, and genuinely deserved of more.
Your key to greater success and growth is to learn and embody prioritization, focus, and communication skills that impact your perception.
This is why what I teach lights me up so much.
It’s more than having a color-coded calendar, organized files, or crafted goals.
This is the stuff that changes your career, your relationships, and your life.
These are the qualities that make you feel successful and rewarded and joyful — which btw, is why you’ve worked so hard for so long, isn’t it?
Not to feel exhausted, scattered, and behind all the time. Rather show up as the mentor, role model, and leader you were born to be.
Here’s my ask of you.
Sit quietly and ask yourself what you need to do to be more in control and be a better leader.
Maybe it’s to reprioritize. Maybe it’s to ask for help.
If that’s something that you are called to do, I’d be honored to have a conversation with you about it. I offer a free breakthrough session where we talk about what’s keeping you stuck and simple actions to help you get out of it immediately.
If you’re tired of feeling overloaded, overstretched, and not reaching your goals as fast as you wish you did, take me up on this right here.
There’s something to be said for getting what you deserve, don’t you think?
To getting more of the right things done,
With all my love
Mridu
