how to stop procrastinating

You don’t want to call the insurance company or put away those boxes sitting at the top of the steps for 3 weeks.

So you put it off.

Even though you know procrastinating will make it even more overwhelming later.

Then why do you do it?

Because when you procrastinate you feel momentary relief.

You get to substitute that annoying or stressful task with something you really want to do (or at least don’t hate doing).

Like, writing your newsletter, scrolling Instagram, organizing your desk, or checking email.

This feeling of immediate relief is what makes the cycle especially vicious.

Because essentially it means…

You get rewarded for procrastinating.

And we know that when we’re rewarded for something, we tend to do it again.

And again.

And yet again.

That’s why procrastination isn’t just a one-off, one-time behavior.

Instead, it becomes a vicious cycle and a chronic habit.

So what do we do about it?

We must embrace that procrastination is about emotions before it is about productivity.

When you manage your emotions you develop the self-control to take the actions you know you should.
