How To Stop Details From Falling Through The Cracks

A client asked:

“How do I stop letting details fall through the cracks? I’ve been feeling unorganized, overwhelmed, and riddled with anxiety. I need to get control. Help.”

There are boatloads of tips and strategies to get on top of your shizzle and wake up with a reliable plan every day.

Here’s one approach that’s pretty simple to remember.

It’s a 3-part structure that goes like this:

1. Create a master list
2. Break it down into baby steps
3. Plan the steps on your calendar

Create a master list…

That’s one place for all your thoughts, to-do’s, projects, requests, demands, and tasks to live. For instance, your one place could be:

– On a Google doc
– On Evernote or OneNote
– In a journal
– In your favorite metallic notebook (am I the only one who has this?)

Break it down into baby steps…

What are all the next actions related to your task or project? Can you break it down even further? For instance:

“Finish presentation” may have many next steps to complete it like
:

  • create the slides
  • find images
  • send to team for feedback
  • implement feedback
  • send to proofreading
  • write email to client
  • upload final copy on shared network
  • drink wine. plenty of wine.

Thinking in small actions results in big-time clarity.

Plan the steps on your calendar

How long does each task take? When do you have time? When will you have the most energy for it? What are my biggest priorities?

If you’re not sure what steps to plan first, try completing this phrase:
“Before my head hits the pillow tonight these are the three things I must do to feel successful today: ______________.”

. . .

To get control of your day and thoughts do some simple organizing and planning ahead of time.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to take hours. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to happen.
