It’s 9:13 a.m.
You’ve got a list of important things to do and are motivated to make headway.
Yet somewhere between your dings, rings, beeps, and your client who promises “It will just take a minute” (yeah right)…your day disappears.
It’s beyond frustrating especially since you HAVE taken action.
You deal with the crisis.
You return the calls.
You respond to the messages.
So why do you feel so unaccomplished?
You’re caught in the illusion of productivity.
It’s deceptive and goes like this:
- Step 1: You knock off the easy things, the low-hanging fruit. (The email, the call, the invoice).
- Step 2: You review your lists (again) going in circles
- Step 3: You stagnate, circle back, have no clear direction, and get back to more low-hanging fruit. (The email, the call, the invoice).
There’s no doubt You. Are. Busy.
But at the end of the day when you get nothing meaningful done, your success transforms into failure and frustration.
So what can you do about it?
Focus on the right things.
Here’s a trick that works for me.
Ask yourself this clarifying question before you start your day.
What will make me FEEL most successful when my head hits the pillow tonight?
Seriously, don’t jump into your day without answering this question.
I typically like to keep it to three tasks like,
- Go for a 45-minute walk
- Write my newsletter
- Create my coaching bonus
Write it down. Keep it in front of you. This is your visual anchor for the day.
Notice it is not:
- Spend 3 hours in email
- Rewrite my to-do list 5 times
- Scroll IG and feel jealous that everyone is vacationing at the beach
This powerful exercise gives you clarity on where to put your energy and leaves you feeling accomplished each and every night.
That is a magnificent way to live, don’t you think?
Productivity isn’t about checking off more, more, more.
It’s an emotion you feel when you get the results you want.
It’s about doing what aligns with your goals and values in the most effective way.
I love that feeling.
You can experience it too.
Don’t settle for the illusion of productivity.
Set your intentions and focus on the right things.
Living the life you’ve declared to live is on the line.
