Learning to plan when you don’t like to

Do you want to plan more but hate the idea of being on a schedule?

Cringe at the idea of infringing on your go-with-the-flow personality?

You’re not alone. So many women I speak to feel the same way.

Looking at a packed schedule feels restrictive and stressful for two reasons.

One, it’s overwhelming.

Two, it feels terrible when you don’t get the things done that you’ve scheduled. You feel defeated before you even get started.

Good news.

You don’t need a full schedule or calendar to be productive.

You need to plan with specificity.

Here’s a plan without specifics:

You put “strategy” on your calendar. But when the time comes for it, you have no idea where to put your efforts.

Because you have a dozen projects that fall under “strategy.”

So instead of buckling down and figuring out what to do, you get distracted.

You spend time in email.

Or on Amazon.

Or down a rabbit hole.

Next time, get specific. Answer this question when you plan your task/activity.

“What EXACTLY will I be working on?”

Maybe it’s an outline, 30 minutes of research, or creating the first three slides of a presentation. It’s not simply “strategy.”

If you don’t decide exactly where to put your energy before the time comes, you’ll find ample ways to waste your time when it does.

By planning the specific action, you’re far more likely to do it.

To get it done. To get it off your plate. Or, at the very least, to make progress in the right direction.

When you get more of what you planned done, you go from feeling defeated to feeling successful.

You go from unfocused to clarity.

You get the right things done without overscheduling.

Don’t overcomplicate it. It really is that simple.
