If everything feels important, read this

The other day, I found myself staring at my to-do list.

It was long and organized.

And it was also…

Completely unhelpful.

I had emails to respond to, content to create, follow-ups to send, a proposal to review.

And yet, I sat there thinking, “Where do I even start?”

So naturally, I did what any productive person would do…

I adjusted the list. Rearranged a few things. Checked something easy off.

Felt accomplished for about 12 seconds.

Because deep down, I already knew what actually mattered.

I just wasn’t doing it.

And that’s the real issue for most people.

It’s not that you don’t know what’s important.

It’s that the things that matter most are often the hardest or most uncomfortable to focus on.

Here’s how to change that.

Step #1: Stop overcomplicating the decision

When everything feels important, we assume we need a better system.

A better app.
A better list.
A better color-coding situation.

But most of the time, the answer is already there.

If you paused and asked, “What actually matters most right now?”

You’d know.

It might not be the easiest thing.

It might not be the quickest win.

Which is exactly why your brain keeps suggesting other options.

The more you try to “figure it out,” the further you drift from what’s already clear.

Step #2: Pay attention to what you’re avoiding

This is the step no one loves.

If something keeps getting pushed to tomorrow… there’s a reason.

The email you haven’t sent.
The decision you haven’t made.
The conversation you keep rehearsing but not having.

Those things tend to carry weight. They matter.

They require energy and might even feel a little uncomfortable.

So instead, your brain offers a very compelling alternative: “Let’s just knock out a few quick things first.”

And suddenly, you’re deep in tasks that feel productive… but change nothing.

Avoidance is usually pointing directly at what matters most.

Step #3: Make one clear decision and commit

Clarity doesn’t come from more thinking.

It comes from deciding.

Pick the one thing that matters most. And give it a real place in your day.

Not squeezed in between meetings.

Not “I’ll get to it later.”

Planned. Protected. Done.

Because once you decide, everything else gets easier.

You make better decisions about what fits, what to wait on, and what doesn’t deserve your time right now.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need more time or a better system to figure out what’s important.

You already know.

You just need to pause, get honest with yourself, and decide.

There’s a lot of time and mental energy wasted telling yourself you’re not sure when the answer is already there.

And even more gets lost staying busy with easy tasks that make you feel productive, but are really just keeping you from what matters most.

That constant second-guessing is what keeps you stuck.

So instead of overthinking it, trust what you already know and move.

Because the moment you do, you stop spinning and start making real progress on the things that actually matter.
