Simple habits you keep skipping (that actually work)

A client recently said to me, “I know what works for other people… but my situation is different.”

She wasn’t being difficult. She was being honest.

She had a full plate. A demanding role. A lot of moving parts.

And she felt like the typical advice didn’t apply to her.

But here’s what I see all the time.

We convince ourselves that our situation is so unique that the fundamentals won’t work.

  • Our job is different.
  • Our schedule is different.
  • Our team is different.
  • Our life is just… more complicated.

So we keep searching for a more customized solution.

A better system. A more perfect approach.

And in the process, we delay doing the things that actually work.

Here’s how to shift that.

Step #1: Stop overcomplicating what already works

The basics work.

  • Prioritizing your Top 3.
  • Blocking time for focused work.
  • Turning off notifications.
  • Following up when you say you will.

None of these are new or flashy.

And yet, they’re the exact things that consistently create results.

When you tell yourself your situation is different, it’s easy to dismiss these as too simple.

But most of the time, it’s exactly what you need more of.

Step #2: Notice where you’re making yourself the exception

Here’s the thing. You don’t ignore everything.

You ignore specific things.

  • “I can’t time block because my day is unpredictable.”
  • “I can’t turn off notifications because people need me.”
  • “I can’t limit meetings because that’s just how our culture works.”

Maybe. But maybe not.

There’s usually more flexibility than you think.

Even if you can’t apply something fully, you can apply part of it.

Even if it’s just one hour of focus time instead of three.

Or silencing notifications for 30 minutes instead of two hours.

Partial progress still moves things forward.

The moment you stop making yourself the exception, you open up more options.

Step #3: Pick one basic and follow it

Choose ONE simple, proven habit and commit to it consistently.

  • Maybe it’s identifying your top three priorities before you check email.
  • Maybe it’s protecting one hour of focused work each day.
  • Maybe it’s ending meetings five minutes early so you can reset and breathe.

The key isn’t finding the perfect system.

It’s following through on a simple one.

Because consistency beats complexity every time.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need a completely different solution.

You don’t need something more advanced or more customized.

You need to trust that what works for others can work for you, too.

When you stop trying to reinvent everything and start applying the basics, things get lighter.

Clearer. More manageable.

And that’s where real progress happens.
