How Planning Forward Can Beat The Blues

Spread the love

Hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend! We thoroughly enjoyed ours. Nashville was rocked with U2’s unbelievable concert, and we enjoyed a marathon day of indulgent barbecues. But now that Bono has left the city and my ears are no longer ringing from fireworks,  I’m suffering from the post-holiday red, white and blues.

What I really need to do is focus on our next long weekend so I have something to look forward to. 🙂 I find that when I have  positive, productive and/or fun things to anticipate, I can simultaneously get myself in a more positive mood. Labor Day is in exactly two months which is enough time to get excited about plans but not too far in advance that it’s eons away. If you haven’t already made plans here are some ideas.

  • If you’ve been meaning to have a group of friends or family over, Labor Day is a great weekend for your last summer hurrah:
    • This weeks “To Do’s”: Get your guest list together and send out a save the date email or card.
  • If want to get away and make an end-of-summer trip:
    • This weeks “To Do’s:  There are some amazing deals offered on social sites like Groupon and LivingSocial. Sign up for daily “escapes” or “travel” emails and find out about awesome travel deals
  • If you want to ensure it’s a work-free weekend when you can simply chill out.
    • This weeks “To Do’s”: Make a list of “must do projects” for this summer, (like “finish painting the deck” or “clean our garage”). Work backwards from the end of August and mark key project milestones on your calendar…so you’re sure to be complete before September
  • If you want to take advantage of local happenings in your town/city. (Some things you need to buy tickets for or make reservations in advance).
    • This weeks “To Do’s”: Google “Your town/city’s name September Happenings 2011.” (If you’re in a very remote area type in the nearest city’s name). Almost every city in America has an event schedule or local listing of what’s upcoming. Also, if you see something you’re interested in, send an email to friends who might be too. Organizing a great Labor Day could be that simple.
  • If you still have boxes of 4th of July decorations to put away and haven’t put a stitch of thought into Labor Day:
    • This weeks “To Do’s”: Get your decorations stored and get yourself back into routine. Mark your calendar for next Monday with: “Next holiday in only 7 weeks! Make fun plans!” 🙂

Other ideas? Please email me. I’d love to know!

(What will I be doing? I’m planning on hosting a long-overdue evening for a set of friends we haven’t seen in a while. I’m getting my guest list together right now!)

this is one of the best posts. Thanks. I’m definitely feeling the post-camp/post-july 4th blues but I did start working on a trip to Cancun for November. I did think about rolling up some tshirts too and sorted through a huge stack of papers.
