What’s the best way to travel back in time or tell a memorable story? Look through your old photos. Preserve your precious memories with these few strategies:
- Get everything scanned.
Scanning is the best way to ensure that your photos will be preserved and can be shared forever. Plus you’ll save a ton of closet and bookshelf space.
- Make regular backups of your photos.
Consider a remote back-up like Carbonite, which will back your computer up over the internet. That gives you extra protection against natural disasters
- Don’t keep your photos in the basement or in the attic.
The attic is too hot, and the basement is too damp. These conditions will make your photos degrade even faster.
- Use acid-free, lignin-free and PVC-free storage materials.
Look for photo albums/photo boxes that specifically say they are “acid-free, lignin-free and PVC-free.” Avoid plastics that aren’t mylar, polyester, polypropylene or polyethylene. They will eat away at your photos over time.
- Make duplicate copies of any picture you plan to display.
Get one copy to display and one to keep in storage as back-up in case anything happens to the display one. (Especially if the displayed one is in the sunlight. Light fades photos immensely).
Mridu, I love it! Great tips!
