The #1 Reason You Collect Clutter…And How To Stop It

Spread the love

Have you ever counted the piles?

The piles of stuff all over your house.

Some are really obvious. Like the ones on your kitchen counters or on your family room table.

But what about the other ones? Lurking in a corner or on a hallway table for who knows how long?

The hated “C” word: Clutter, that is. It piles up high and it piles up fast. Ever wondered how stuff got there in the first place?

Today I’m going to reveal the #1 reason you collect clutter. And trust me, it’s not what you think.

And then I’ll tell you the 3 easy peasy steps to put an end to it. And trust me, it’s easier than you think. 😉

So take a quick couple minutes to check out my vid and when you’re done please join me in the comments to let me know:

  • which one of the three tips you’re going to use AND
  • an area in your home that’s a “clutter magnet”

My heart skips a beat when I hear from you, so puh-lease don’t leave me hangin’.

I love your commitment to simplifying and making each day a little bit happier than the next. You are awesome!

Wishing you so much success,
Mridu

We are in the middle of selling our condo, and we got rid of our hall table and a small bookcase to help make things look bigger. Not having the table just inside the door has made a big difference. Now we need to put things away properly when we get home, rather than just dumping them on the table to process later.

Mridu

That is an awesome example Heather! Thanks for sharing. It’s amazing what we’ll do when we put ourselves in a situation that makes us do it. 😉 Good luck with the sale of your home and your move!

I’m laughing as I look at the desk on which my computer sits – I can’t get rid of it, but I will try baskets to arrange the piles better, and perhaps dispose of most of it int the process.
Thanks

My office desk. I’m going to get up right now, clear the paper clutter off, wipe the desk clean, and enjoy the clear surface. Then, I’ll choose ONE thing to do – get out my list of church people to call today and do that. Thanks, Mridu.

Betty

How do you remove a kitchen island……my worst collector of clutter!!

Mridu

LOL!! Okay Betty, you probably can’t go with step #1 – remove it, but you could clear it off (check out step #3 again) or put something big enough there that you can’t put as much clutter on it. Like a large vase with flowers or centerpiece. Kitchens are the hardest, I know!! xo, mridu

True, you can’t get rid of your computer…LOL! But you’re on the right track. Love the basket idea to help you manage the piles. At the very least they will make it easier for you to work, be less distracting for you and hopefully feel less overwhelmed when you walk into that space. Thanks for sharing Tina! xo, Mridu

LOVE IT Quay! There is something about a clear surface that is SOOOOO relaxing. Great job! And thanks so much for inspiring the rest of us. 😉 xo, Mridu

Hello again – I thought the #1 reason for clutter was going to be mindlessly bringing clutter into your home in the first place – tons of brochures from vacation, too many bargains from an estate sale, etc.. And the cure for that, which I want to be more MINDFUL of is – BEFORE I pick it up to take it home: Do I Really NEED this? Do I LOVE it? If not, pat myself on the back for getting rid of clutter on the front end! 🙂

Diane

About the only flat surface in my house that is without clutter is the ceiling and that’s because I can’t reach it! My biggest source of clutter is paper and as I look around my home office, there is paper everywhere…on the floor, on my desk, on the shelves…but not on the ceiling. I need to clear the paper off and put it into boxes. I’m definitely a piler, Mridu.

Mridu

LOL! I just had this visual of paper piles on my ceiling fans. 😉 Diane, great idea to start with those boxes or bins, just to get your surfaces cleared. I think it will really help you focus and may encourage you to be more selective with the papers you’re saving (as to not collect those piles again). Would love to hear how it goes! xo, mridu

You’re right – that’s the reason it comes in! But flat surfaces are why the clutter piles up and stays. 🙂 You know how much I love those two questions: Do I need it? Do I love it? Applied to pretty much everything in your life – and you’ll find yourself surrounded by a lot less clutter and many more meaningful things. BRAVO Quay! Thanks for being such an inspiration to the rest of us. xo, mridu

Allison

There is clutter in every room in my house except for one, the guest room. It is so overwhelming I don’t know where to start. I know I just need to pick a spot, but it’s hard choosing which one. I did take care of one flat surface in the kitchen. I bought a file organizer to get it off the surface. That seems to be helping.

Mridu

Allison, I know it can be overwhelming. But look at your success in the kitchen. Just one flat surface cleared and you feel better. That’s really the secret. Break down your project into little steps and take care of one small area at a time. That’s it…just one. I recommend you hit another easy to tackle surface to keep up your momentum. You’re on the right path..I know you can do this!!
Thanks so much for sharing, Mridu
